NASA's Mars Balance Mass Challenge

NASA is looking for creative yet practical ideas to find a dual purpose for Balance mass ("dead weight") jettisoned from Mars landers like the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). The question NASA hopes to answer is, "If you had up to 150 kg of ejectable mass prior to entry and another 150 kg during the entry and landing phase of a Mars mission, what could you do with it that was useful and advances knowledge in a scientific or technological way?"

Description

The question NASA hopes to answer is, "If you had up to 150 kg of ejectable mass prior to entry and another 150 kg during the entry and landing phase of a Mars mission, what could you do with it that was useful and advances knowledge in a scientific or technological way?" This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. Ideas, drawings, and detailed procedures are required. Ideas from all disciplines are welcome.
