We are a moderately sized district with approximately 60,000 students with 34% of our students eligible for meal benefits. Our department prints both the first and second verification letter on bright colored paper and uses window envelopes. This grabs the parent/guardian’s attention and also keeps the letter from becoming “lost” among everyday household mail. The response rate increased by 12% when we implemented this change and overall had a 62% response rate in 2016.
Also, letters are generated in the student’s primary language as indicated in the student database which helps increase our response rate from families where English isn’t the primary language.
